WHAT WAS THE FPS ALL ABOUT?

The Foundation Placement Scheme was an up to 12 month, pre-entry level, paid, vocational training placement for individuals from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic backgrounds looking to build experience in the media industry. Screen Yorkshire, ITV Yorkshire, BBC and Skillset has given talented individuals from across the region the opportunity to gain the skills, experience and networks in order to kick-start a career in media & broadcasting.

  • THE TRAINING SCHEMES INCLUDED:

- Up to 12 months vocational media industry experience
- A variety of roles to choose from
- A training bursary

- Contribution towards childcare costs where applicable

 

  • HOW WAS THE TRAINING DELIVERED?

The scheme is a vocational training placement so the emphasis was on the job learning within a particular role. Screen Yorkshire, ITV Yorkshire, BBC and Skillset came together to offer a range of training roles across television production, radio, multimedia and business support roles. Placements were based at ITV, BBC and independent production companies across the Yorkshire & Humber region.

 

  • ELIGIBILITY:

The scheme stipulated the following:
- From a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background
- Over the age of 18
- From the Yorkshire & Humber region
- A UK resident or have the right to work or train in the UK
- Interested in gaining hands-on work experience in the media & broadcasting industry

WHAT HAS THIS LEAD TO?

Previous placement areas have included cameras, sound, research, finance, graphics, journalism, technical assistants, post-production and runners. Many of these positions were extended, and trainees have often gone on to secure jobs in the media sector. Please see our Trainee Profiles page for examples of this.
